El Greco's- Domenikos Theotokopoulos- artistic visions for human rights ...in Utrecht. The Netherlands.

                                                   From darkness to light...
The symbols and philosophies of Platonism and ancient Neo-Platonism, Plotinus and Dionysius Aeropagite are repeated in the film- biography ' El Greco' by Iannis Smaragdis.
The master Domenicos Theotokopoulos...on this issue came also to the light through the darkness.
The English art historian David Davies who gave a serious attention to elements as Platonism and Neo- Platonism in connection to  El Greco's art asserted also that'... his Greek- Christian education and the Orthodox Church together with the religious climate of the Counter-Reformation and the aesthetics of mannerism acted as catalysts to activate his individual technique...'
Curator at the Museo del Prado, Madrid Jose Alvarez Lopera  concludes also that ' the presence of ' Byzantine memories is obvious in El Greco's fully grown and developed artistic behaving..  '
The exposition El Greco & Pintura Moderna in the Prado Museum, Madrid until 5 October 2014 and Iannis Smaragdis' film ' El Greco' about his art and life in the Instituto Cervantes in Utrecht depicted the art and the spirit of the master who regarded as a precursor of expressionism and cubism.
400 hundred  years since the death of the Greek painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos( 1541-1614 ), sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance the Embassies of Greece and Spain in the Netherlands have been depicted his life and art that won a worldwide reputation.

' He was born in 1541 in Crete as all of us we know it ', he mensioned Ioannis Smaragdis.
I was also born in Crete. But the master inspired me not only because we both are Greeks and born in the same place but special because my family-house is precis opposite of  El Greco's family-house at the same neighborhood...Unbelievable also..Two steps further the house of the great Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis... '.
Smararagdis ' El Greco' film is started from Domenicos Theotokopoulos life and training as master in Crete wish at that time was part of the Republic of Venice and before his travelling at age 26 to Venice. After a short period of working in Italy he moved to Toledo in Spain in 1577 till his death. In Toledo inspired and created the most of his great paintings which are regarded as precursor of expressionism and cubism. In Toledo he signed contracts for paintings that ware to adorn the Church of Santo Domino el Antiguo. By September 1579 he had finished nine paintings included The Trinity and the Assumption of the Virgin.

                                                   From darkness to light...
Nikos Kazantzakis the famous Greek writer and philosopher ( '  Zorba the Greek', Martin Scorsese adaptation, The Last Temptation of Christ, etc) wrote: ' From the moment I was born I have been accompanied by a mysterious and invisible companion. He does't seem to be an angel..He is always disappointed in me , as if I could create another, a better life. He never tells me who he is or what he wants...
I would gladly kill him, but I can't...I kick him away, but he always comes back. He is a monster..'
In the biographic-film ' El Creco' the diabolical Guevara portrays this ...shadow., El Greco 's alter ego, and at the end the two clash...
According to Kazantzakis '...Only light can come forth from such a violent confrontation...'
For those few that search in deep and sunless waters ...( not the mere tourists..)the Evil, the darkness is the key that will lead them into the light.
The great Nobel Prize winner, Greek poet Odysseas Elytis noticed also about it...' Only he who fights with the darkness within will one day have a place under the sun..'
El Greco's mature style is the use of that light. As Brown notes, '...each figure seems to carry its own light within or reflects the light that emanates from an unseen source ...' Fernando Marias and Agustin Bustamante Garcia the scholars who studied El Greco's handwritten notes connect the power that the master gives to the light with the ideas underlyning Christian Neo- Platonism.
Manet was inspired by El Greco's Holy Trinity in his painting ' The Angels at Christ's Tomb (1864, oil in canvas, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.
According to scholarship the French painter traveled to Spain in 1865 and had the chance to develop his knowledge  of work by El Greco.
