The Duck- 2001- is made from painted aluminium.
His duck is really celebrated and his giraffe also, but Stephan Balkenhol 's the greatest source of inspiration was always the human being.

His Duck in Amsterdam's Artzuid it is not alone. Two fins around it, expressed the threatening presence of sharks.
Sharks... in our really life?
May be because of Balkenhol's thinking about the human being's feelings and emotions.
His first sculptures made in the mid-1980s were human figures. They were carved out of tree trunks, but always recognizable in the unfished column( pedestal ) which he was always used to support his sculptural people.

Later he started making animals as well as people. His animals sculptures have shown a generalisation but the most of the times they almost occurred to have a connection with the human's behaviour.
The Duck is in the reality small and innocent and has no need to fear the sharks. Such as the simple and good quality people whose their simplicity protected them from enemies...
